While you may think that you already know the basics, we wanted to just cover them all in detail so you can properly care for your mouth.

Brushing Your Teeth

It is important that you brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each. You should avoid brushing right after eating, especially if you ate or drank something acidic. It is also important to remember to change out your toothbrush regularly. A worn toothbrush isn’t going to do an effective job.

When you brush, there are proper techniques that you should follow to get the most out of the task. Follow these tips to properly brush your teeth and keep your mouth healthy:

  • Use a small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a pea.
  • Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
  • Use gentle and short circular motions to brush the outside surface and chewing surface of your teeth. Be sure to get the back molars.
  • Flip your toothbrush upside down to get the inside of your top teeth.
  • Flip it back around to get the inside of your bottom teeth.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue. This is where a lot of bacteria collects. You can get a tongue scraper to clean your tongue really well.
  • Spit and rinse!

If you follow these steps and make sure you are getting every corner of your mouth, you can keep your teeth much cleaner than if you aimlessly brush. Brushing With An Electric Toothbrush

One thing to note is that brushing with an electric toothbrush will differ slightly for the technique we listed out above. Since electric toothbrushes have a vibrating brush head, you will not need to move your toothbrush in circular motions.

Instead, start at the back of your teeth and hold your toothbrush head at a 45-degree angle toward your gums. Apply light pressure as you move from one tooth to the next, making sure you brush each tooth. Do this to every tooth as you move your brush through your mouth. You can also use your electric toothbrush to clean your tongue.

How to Properly Floss

Flossing your teeth is another dental task that you should be doing at least once a day! We know that it doesn’t seem that important but it is. Flossing can clean and dislodge food that is stuck between your teeth. This can help reduce bacteria and plaque that collects in your mouth, which can help to reduce cavities and chances of getting gum disease.

Flossing is one thing that many people do not do ever or enough. While flossing from time to time can slightly help, if you want to keep your mouth as healthy and clean as possible, floss daily!

Again, flossing is not just sticking a string between your teeth. There is a technique to follow that can help ensure you are getting the most out of flossing. Follows these steps when you floss:

  • Start with a piece of floss that is about 18 inches. You just don’t want your piece of floss to be too short.
  • To properly hold the floss, wrap most of the floss around both of your middle fingers, leaving an inch or two between your fingers to clean your teeth.
  • Hold the floss with your thumbs and index fingers.
  • Place the floss between two teeth and gently glide it up and down. Be sure to rub the floss against both sides of each tooth. To do this, make a U-shape around each tooth and move the floss up and down.
  • Carefully do this between each space between teeth. Make sure to rub the floss up and down your tooth to fully remove plaque and debris.
  • Be careful not to jam the floss into your gums, this can cause scratching or bruising to your gums.
  • Once you have moved throughout your entire mouth and flossed every space between teeth, you can rinse and spit!

Flossing is a great way to remove any plaque that can’t be reached by your toothbrush. This means that your teeth will be cleaner and healthier. Try to start flossing regularly, but make sure you use the right technique!

The Right Equipment

When it comes to proper dental care, you will also want to make sure that you have the right equipment. This means using a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristle brush. Be sure to replace your toothbrush or electric brush head every few months or when the bristles begin to flay or are worn out. This will also help keep your teeth cleaner.
